Many people have either tried to Reseal their Stamped or Colored Concrete by
themselves or hired a less expensive person who says that they know how to do this for the
reason of saving money in these difficult economic times.
Although we as a Decorative Concrete Contractor fully understand this, there are
a few issues that you need to know if you decide to go this route.
First and foremost all sealers are not alike. Without going into an elaborate
discussion here, if you use a Sealer that is incompatible with what was previously used
on your concrete, you might create a problem that is rampant in our industry, SEALER
CLOUDING OR BLUSHING.
We are presently researching the cause of this issue Nationwide through an
effort of the American Society of Concrete Contractors that Split-Rok Construction is a
Member. To date these are some of our findings:
1. Resealing too much actually has a disadvantage rather than an advantage. Too
many coats of sealer cause the sealer to become un-breathable. Sealers are designed to
breath. As a result they allow moisture to pass through the surface unimpeded and allow
moisture to evaporate and not get trapped under the sealer. Concrete is like a sponge and
therefore moisture under your concrete wicks up and if too many coats of sealer are applied
to the surface, water gets trapped and when condensed cannot pass through and causes a
blushing or a whitening effect.
2. Incompatible Sealers. As explained earlier for the sake of simplicity I will
be brief here.
Sealers are not all alike. Home Depot for example sells Concrete Sealers that although they might
work on fresh concrete that has not been previously sealed they can and do create sometimes
irreparable problems in Resealing your Decorative Concrete. There are primarily Three types of
sealers: Water Based, Styronated Acrylic and Pure Acrylic. Use the wrong one and you’ve opened a
Pandora's Box of problems that you might and might not be able to correct without an expensive
removal process that could cost you 3-4 times what it would have cost initially to have a
Professional Reseal in the first place.
3. Resealing in high-heat or where High-Humidity is present can cause moisture
to be trapped in the sealer and cause Blushing. Although I find this easy to correct in most
cases why try to cut corners or push ahead because you just want to get it done. The cost to
correct this can also be expensive.
